Fixing a slow washing machine

My washing machine was filling slowly so I figured it was probably just the prefilter needing cleaning, then I figured your washer might be slow too but maybe you don't know how to clean your prefilter!

This is how it works on this Inglis machine and also on the old Maytag I had before this, I suspect it's similar for lots of models, hopefully this helps somebody!
