Fire managers on the Malheur National Forest took a proactive, strategic approach to managing the lightning-caused 204 Cow Fire, helping to reduce fuel-build up and restore forest health in an area dominated by beetle-killed trees that had not seen fire in 30 years. While this was not a planned fire, the lightning-caused fire was managed in such a way to help achieve many of the resource objectives similar to a prescribed fire.
