RetroPlay | Deus Ex: The Quest for DLC

The definition of "Retro" has been stretched pretty thin over the last couple of decades, in a way that I find rather alarming... Recently I saw someone refer to DOOM 2016 as "Retro," and just about had a heart attack. "Retro style" turned into a thing at some point as well. I actually kinda get that. Pixel-style games can evoke that sense of nostalgia for games of yesteryear without the horrifying cost of trying to find an ancient disc or cartridge, and the hardware to play it on. No game from last year (or even the last decade) can be reasonably termed "Retro," and no amount of "Well I don't remember it, so it must be" is going to change my mind.

So, a little compare and contrast is in order. DLC Quest is a retro-styled game from 2013 (so not retro) that takes a satirical swipe at the DLC culture we all wound up accepting eventually. Even if it wasn't good for the industry as a whole. Deus Ex, published in 2000, on the other hand, is one I would consider "retro," more than 20 years later. It was a beloved part of the transition from older shooters like Doom (no, not that one), to sort of beast we see today. Although I suppose we're getting a bit of the cheaty-thing, as the version I play to us is a mod that was published later to clean up the graphics and make it playable on modern machines-- a sacrifice made for the greater good, preserving a piece of cultural heritage that might otherwise have been consigned to the dust bin of history.
