MZTV 1017: Foundational Teaching Vs "New Truth"
The hardest part about walking in the faith is that, after one has learned and become rooted in all the basic teachings, a walk in Christ then becomes a thing of endurance.
In the beginning, learning all the "new truths" is exciting. Your heartbeat quickens, you can't stop reading, you can't stop watching videos, vast new horizons open up, your life changes. What happens then? Endurance. But some people just can't stand the drudgery of doing nothing except continuing to believe, and so they look (consciously or not) for "new truth." They want something that will pique the interest and get the blood flowing. They want to re-create the excitement of the early days.
For some, the appeal might be to discover something that goes against some eminent teacher; it's potentially tough on the ego to think, "Oh, I believe everything that so-and-so believes." One tends to think of oneself then as unoriginal. Or a copycat. There is a subconscious need to break new ground, to glom onto something that is either sensational or that goes against the "majority." (I put "majority" in quotation marks because the majority in question is the body of Christ, not the mass of Christianity; let's call it the majority of the little flock.) What is desperately wanted here (again, either consciously or subconsciously) is originality. As if!
As if any of us came up with any of this truth in the first place. Our apostle Paul was the original un-original copycat. Who did he copy? Christ. I'm the latest un-original copycat. Who did I copy? The guy who copied the guy who copied the guy who copied the guy who copied the guy who copied the guy who copied the guy who copied Paul.
Truth never changes, AND THERE ARE NEVER MORE OF THEM. Yes, there are nuances and new facets within the good old truths that we can discover, but no one comes up with "new truth." If the basics aren't good enough for us, then perhaps we ought to examine our motives. Are we looking to become mature saints, rooted and grounded in the faith, or are we looking for the latest, greatest revelation from the latest, greatest rebel? This may be a good question to ask oneself, both for the "rebels" and the "copycats."
