Topic: Today we celebrate the memorial of a new saint, St. Titus Brandsma, just recently canonized as a saint! With the way he carried out resistance to the evils he faced in his time (the Nazis in Germany), we are challenged to reflect on how it is that we respond to the evil we see and experience. Jesus asks us not to respond to violence with violence (and don’t get what He says confused with seeking to be a victim of violence!), but to respond with love and peace. We are not to be transmitters of what the world offers, but be transformers. How many of us could put ourselves in Jesus’ place during His passion and death and act as He did - silent as a lamb - as people cursed, punched, spat, insulted, and beat him up? And then on top of that, look down at those same people (through blood-filled eyes) with love, asking for mercy on them, as He hung on the cross THEY wanted Him to be crucified on? Really, I don’t think any of us can, which it’s such a blessing for us to be able to ask Jesus to help us respond as He asks of us in times of adversity. May we all seek to have peace begin with us through Jesus who strengthens us.
