The 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was on the invitation of the Afghan government of the day, facing a coup by radical [US funded] opposition.

Much like the Syrian campaign of 2015 - from the perspective of international law, it was a legal intervention, grounded in the Soviet-Afghan friendship treaty of 5 December 1978.
