Homicides increased by 7% in 2021 and gun violence has been on the rise since 2014, with deadly shootings in large cities up by 80%.
Coming in at the bottom of the list was St. Louis, Missouri, which was named the most dangerous city in America. Milnes says it’s hard to know why St. Louis is so dangerous, but one factor might be the fact that it’s struggling economically. “The population has decreased over time rather than increased like the population of America and the GDP of the St. Louis metro area has grown slower than the overall country since 2001,” says Milnes.
