One of the best ways to add unexpected texture to any recording is to play a guitar solo with a strongly a contrasting tone. If the song is edgy, try a clean guitar sound. If the song is clean, choose a distorted guitar.

The gorgeously open sonics of voices, guitar, bass, drums and lap steel carry the song. But right in the middle, the pristine clean sounds give way to a blistering lead solo played on a 1965 Harmony Rocket H59 with ALL 3 pickups engaged.
