Eastern Colorado Prairies

Colorado is a beautiful state. Dominated by the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains, the eastern Colorado prairies are overlooked, but they have a beauty of their own. The starkness of the landscape is appealing to the eye, especially under overcast skies, or at morning, or evenings. On the day I shot this footage, it was overcast and unseasonable cool. In the southeastern corner of the state, there were rain showers, wind, and gray skies.

The High Plains (25) run from the Nebraska Panhandle and SE Wyoming southward through eastern Colorado and western Kansas, to the Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles, and eastern New Mexico. The high plains are semi-arid with short-grass and mid-grass prairies. In some areas, you really have to strain your eyes to find a tree.

In between the High Plains and the Southern Rockies lie the Southwestern Tablelands (26), within it are elevated tablelands with reddish canyons, mesas, badlands, gorges, and river breaks in a topography that is mostly broad, rolling plains, piedmonts, and flat plains. The SW Tablelands exist only just east of the mountains in Colorado and New Mexico, in the Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles, and in south-central Kansas in the area of the Gypsum Hills.
