The long vowel A sound is made with AI or AY vowel pair. It can also be made with the A_E pattern but that was in Phonics level 4.

This will be a fun phonics lesson for adults to help you learn American English pronunciation. Today we will do lesson 3 in the Level 5 Adult Phonics series. We will learn the vowel pair AI and the long A sound. I will teach you how to correctly pronounce words Rain, Train, Mail, Nail, Rail, and Tail in an English accent. We will learn the long vowel A sound with the vowel and consonant pair AY. I will teach you how to correctly pronounce the words Gray, Pray, Tray, Hay, Clay, and Play in an American English accent. The long vowel A sound is made by combining two vowels to create the sound. I don't want you to worry about grammar rules for long vowels. I just want you to start to notice the patterns for spelling. I want you to focus on reading and pronouncing the sounds correctly. That is the most important part. This is how a native English speaker learns to read and speak. And you can too.
