Por conta de seu temperamento forte, jogo explosivo e provocador. Isiah Thomas, camisa 11 do Detroit Pistons, colecionou alguns inimigos durante sua vitoriosa carreira na NBA. O problema foi que isso causou também uma das suas maiores tristezas: Não poder fazer parte do histórico e magnífico DreamTeam, medalha de ouro nos Jogos Olímpicos de 1992. Michael Jordan, Larry Bird e até Magic Johnson, foram os principais opositores ao jogador. Jordan teria dito ao encarregado da seleção americana Rod Thorn: “…se Isiah Thomas estiver no elenco, eu prefiro ficar de fora…”Era Thomas ou Jordan.
