Building Community, Making Meaning and Building a Meaning Making Community

This presentation addresses community building and meaning making as activities/environments with great potential for human growth and social transformation. Prevailing understandings of community, meaning and meaning making, including their underlying assumptions and common practices, will be discussed. New understandings of these concepts will be presented in light of the history of one meaning making community -- a twenty - five year old international development community involving thousands of adults and young people. Basic to the varied projects of this community (psychotherapy, theatre, education, youth development, etc.) is that people of all ages learn and grow -- emotionally, intellectually, morally, etc. -- by creating meaning together. Thus, the community is designed in such a way that meaning making is its centerpiece. An ever - expanding and diverse grouping of people intentionally engage in the collective activity of building community/making meaning; in other words, they practice community as one way to create new culture. Methodologically, this is a dialectical, improvisational, activity - based practice. These characteristics will be discussed and illustrate d in order to show the ways in which people are supported to actively create their lives more relationally, more responsibly and more democratically.

Educational Objectives:
1) Gain and understand community and meaning making, including their underlying assumptions and common practices.
2) Explore the above concepts in light of a specific case study of one meaning making community -- a twenty - five year old international development community involving thousands of adults and young people.
