There are some issues where it creates emotional tension if you speak honestly and transparently from two contrary perspectives. We tend to be on one side or the other. Fair and balanced becomes lost with some of our causes. Sometimes we don’t want to cede any aspect of our talking point out of fear: “If we admit their argument has valid elements, we lose ground on our perspective.” Other times folks will overcorrect because of past injustices, i.e., the reparation effect. There are times when our behaviors do not align with God’s Word. There are several reasons for this. James suggested a person could be double-minded. Jesus talked about hypocrisy in Matthew 23. Truthfully, all of us have sinned as Christians. For some, it’s an intentional habit, which makes one wonder if they are a Christian. The process of a hard heart begins when we want something so much that the desire for that thing starts to manage our minds. It’s not that the desire is evil, but it controls us so much that we lose sight of the God-centered, God-managed life. Even good desires can send us down the wrong path. Vaneetha Risner, author of, The Scars That Have Shaped Me, details the suffering in her life, and how the Lord has sustained her through it all. The doctors misdiagnosed her with polio as an infant, which led to 21 surgeries before her thirteen birthday. These events were the beginning of a life of pain and disappointment: quadriplegia, divorce, and the death of her son. One hundred out of one hundred people struggle with the fear of man. Caring about what others think about us is part of our Adamic packaging. I have never counseled a person who did not struggle with this problem to some degree. Our secular community calls it co-dependency or peer pressure. It hardly matters as long as you can biblically define what is happening and apply God’s solutions. She currently serves as a biblical counselor at Lighthouse Community Church in Torrance, CA. She has taught as an adjunct professor for the online Bachelor's degree in Biblical Counseling at T.M.U. Jenn was licensed as a clinical psychologist in 2002, after obtaining her Psy.D in Clinical Psychology and an M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy. Jenn is deeply grateful for how biblical counseling has transformed her faith, life, and counsel. She has been married to her husband Peter since 1996, and they cherish their son Garret.
