WHAT IS INFLUENCE?
HOW DO YOU MEASURE IT?
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE SOME?

Do you remember the days when the words peer pressure dominated almost every conversation between parents and teens?

Many conversations started like “why can’t I _______? I mean everyone I know is...” and ended with the most rhetorical questions ever posed. “Well if all your friends jumped off a cliff...”

Wait. I did do that. It was the precursor to my first back injury and I still deal with the effects of it decades later. But I digress.

The idea that teens or anyone for that matter would be inspired to participate in risky, life threatening behavior just because other people they know did, is unthinkable. Right?

Let me remind you the impact of social media and how it has reached the masses. We don’t see peer pressure simply among teens. All walks of life, all geographies and all age ranges are under similar pressures to be accepted, to be appreciated to be recognized.

There is even a name for those who encourage others to behave a certain way, but a certain product or brand and to believe a certain set of assumptions. They call them influencers.
So how do you know if you are one?

I challenge you to do the same as the respect exercise - ask yourself WHO INFLUENCES ME AND WHY? Make a list of the top five influencers in your life and their top traits and look for the common denominators.

Influencers may or may not be people you respect. Is Donald J. Trump someone who influences your behavior, or attitudes? Is he someone you respect?
