Did this Amboseli elephant greet the hyenas as he walked past?
No.
The bull elephant was sniffing the air to pick up the scent of the hyenas as he was moving to the swamps. The eyesight of elephants is poor so they rely on their sense of smell. Hyenas are very small compared to a elephant but they do have a strong smell - by lifting the trunk and sniffing the air the elephant was able to determine exactly where they were and that they were not doing anything threatening.
