Elephant Herd At the Water | Kruger National Park

An elephant herd come for water at one of the natural water-points in a mostly dry riverbed. Many rivers in Kruger dry up on the surface in the dry season but still have water flowing beneath the sand, at rocky sections the water resurfaces as the flow is disrupted. Where there are no rocky sections the elephants dig down into the sand until they reach the water level. Here the water is backed up for quite a distance, like a natural dam, and the elephants (and other animals) are able to drink and cool off with ease.
