Stretching to resolve pain associated with lack of flexibility WON'T WORK. Here is the science.
Stretching has become big business. There are now facilities opening just to perform stretching. There are people schlocking stretching videos and selling classes to teach stretching. Here is the problem. You can resolve pain associated with lack of flexibility by stretching. Flexibility is not an entity on to its self. This is the same thing that relates to balance. Both are resultants of something else. In the case of flexibility, it is the result of the relationship between the force outputs of two opposing muscles; end of story.
Every muscle has an opposing muscle; ie: the biceps and triceps or the quads and hamstrings. Each produces a certain force; force output. Since each muscle moves a joint in the opposite direction, each muscles force output attempts to work against its opposite muscle when at rest. So for instance, if the quads are stronger then the hamstrings, at night when at rest the quads are going to be trying to straightening the knee while the hamstrings are trying to bend the knee. Since the quads are stronger, they will win and the knee will have a greater desire to want to be straighter. When you wake up you will feel your quads tight and feel you need to stretch them. You may get some improvement in flexibility but that can only last for no more than a day.
The next night the quad's increased force will still beat the hamstring's lesser force and the quads will shorten again. Again, you will end up with shorter quads and if this leads to pain, you will have pain again. You will stretch the quads and get some temporary relief. The next night the same thing happens and this continues to infinitum. You see lots of practitioners who don't understand why you are doing this and never resolve either the flexibility or pain deficits.
Then there is the Yass Method steeped in pure science. The understanding that flexibility is the resultant of the forces of two opposing muscles is well understood and the only way to resolve both flexibility deficits and pain associated with the deficit can be accomplished by strengthening the weaker muscle. The use of progressive resistance is the mechanism. As the strength of the weaker muscle increases becoming closer to the force output of the stronger muscle, both the loss of flexibility associated with the deficit and the associated pain diminish. Both resolve fully once the force output of both opposing muscles is equal. Sustain this balance and loss of flexibility and pain never return. You are now in control of your body. Thanks to the Yass Method and it's understanding.
