The Rusty Sword: Vanguard Island is a short, top-down adventure game inspired by several 16-bit games you know and love.

It features a small island overworld, a large non-linear dungeon, countless monsters to battle, classic art that takes you back through time, and a nostalgic soundtrack. In the game, you venture on a quest to find the hidden Vanguard Relic.

FEATURES:

Non-linear adventure structure with multiple ways to get to most places.

Simple, intuitive controls.

Tons of secrets and Easter eggs.

Designed around single-player, but even more fun with two-player co-op.

Nostalgic graphics and music inspired by many 16-bit classics.

Several display options, including widescreen and classic aspect ratios.

A reluctant recommendation here. The game is super cheap, but it's also literally only 20 minutes long. There's a co-op, but with the tiny amount of content here, it's kinda pointless. Still, it's got a pleasantly retro vibe, and the music isn't terrible.

Basically, you can think of it as being classic Legend of Zelda, except with a tiny overworld, only one boss, and a lot easier. There are hardly any pickups, and while the life potion might come in handy, the bombs are essentially pointless, and... that's it.

This feels more like someone's project for a first-year game design class than a full game. Like a proof of concept (not really enough here to even call it a demo), and I think that it should probably be free. But for only a buck, I can't complain.
