SAVE MONEY // Can you build a workbench from FREE wood?

Turning reclaimed wood and free lumber into an incredible workbench. It’s stout, it’s heavy, and I didn’t pay a dime for any of the wood. Step by step process showing that beginner and inexperienced woodworkers can build the workbench of their dreams.

I’m always on the lookout for lumber. Whether it’s pallets or if I take apart some building or structure my eyes are always open for wood. I’ve wanted a nice, sturdy workbench for years but I never wanted to sink the money into it (despite how much it would help me), but after I procured a stack of 2x8s from the office building I work in I decided it was time to bite the bullet and get this done.

I ripped the 2x8s in half and ended up with twice as many 2x4s – after milling them with a jointer and planer I glued them together to form the top of my workbench.

The legs were made from reclaimed 4x4s. I do not throw the term “reclaimed” around lightly – these 4x4s were once edging around a tree in our backyard and I literally dug them out of ground. They were very dirty so before running them through my expensive equipment I hit them with an aggressive wire brushing and then sanded them to clean them up and verify I hadn’t missed anything non-wood. Once the triple-checking was done I got them all milled down to the same width and depth.

I went with simple mortise and tenon joinery to attach the legs to the benchtop and lap joints to attach the stretchers between the legs. A more sophisticated approach than this would be to use drawbore mortise and tenon where dowels are used to pull that joint tighter; I deemed this not necessary for my needs and time will tell if it’s the right decision.

I love how this bench turned out and I’m already planning few functional improvements (a pipe clamp vise is priority #1) I’ll be making soon.
