Ye Say That I Am

The LORD Jesus Christ has been arrested under the cover of night and brought to the high priest’s house to be arraigned before the Sanhedrin. The Sanhedrin was the religious leaders of the day. They were the chief priests, scribes and elders of the Jews. They had the final authority on decisions that affected the religious and political life of the Jews. The Sanhedrin had the ability to determine life or death in cases that merited such punishment. They were the ultimate authority over the Jews. Until the Romans controlled Israel. The Sanhedrin were still had legal authority, as they were allowed by the Roman government – in Judea, Pontius Pilate was the Roman Authority. Under the thumb of Rome, the Sanhedrin could recommend the punishment of death to Pontius Pilate, however, he could overrule that decision.
