We Resubbed To Video Games Monthly - Import N64, Super Famicom + MORE
In this episode, we unbox, clean, and evaluate our box for November 2021 from Video Games Monthly
For much of 2020, I subscribed to a service called Video Games Monthly, available at a variety of tiers, and will deliver 3, 4, 5, or 10 retro video games to you for your consoles of choice. Ranging in price from $34.99 per month up to $74.99 per month, there can definitely be something here for everyone. I discontinued use of the service in late 2020, but have recently resubscribed. Not only That, but you have a chance to win a free box for yourself, read on to learn more.
What we got:
Yoshi's Island - Super Famicom ($13)
Mario Kart 64 - Japanese N64 ($18)
Midway's Greatest Arcade Hits VOL1 - N64 ($11)
Marvel Nemesis Rise of the Imperfects - Gamecube ($11)
Sonic Spinball - Genesis ($5)
Coaster Works - Dreamcast ($7)
Paid: $44.99+ Shipping
Value: $65
1st up out of the gate was Yoshi's Island for the Super Famicom, a terrific game. It's beautiful, it has terrific music, overall. Just a brilliant game for the Nintendo Super Famicom. This, however, underscore's the importance of making sure your library is updated every month as I already have Yoshi's Island for the Super Famicom. In fact, it's one of those games that I have every version of, NTSC, and TSC - j, and pal. Make someone else very happy as I will use this in a future trade.
Next up was Midway's Greatest Arcade Hits VOL1, and it's interesting because I don't think they ever came out with a volume two. I don't know that I've ever played this, but it's a collection of some of midway's finest retro arcade Games. It's not worth a whole lot but is a compilation, it's worthwhile to play every once in a while.
The 3rd game from the box was probably the heaviest hitter for me, a copy of Mario Kart 64 for the Japanese Nintendo 64. I love collecting import games, and I've just recently started adding to my import N64 collection. This is a great title, and thankfully I don't need to know any Japanese to be able to enjoy It.
In all the boxes that I've gotten from video games monthly, I don't know that I've ever gotten a Dreamcast Game, until NOW. Coaster Works for the Dreamcast looks to be very similar to like a Roller Coaster Tycoon where you can build your own roller coasters and theme parks. As someone who loves going to Disney, I can see this being an occasional laid-back and relaxed playthrough.
Sonic Spinball was up next for the Sega Genesis, and I know this can be kind of a polarizing Game. Like all of the Sonic Games, Sonic Spinball has amazing visuals and the music is absolutely top-notch. I'm not a huge fan of video pinball, but this is one of those games that is again worthwhile to throw in every once in a while just to scratch that itch.
Last up was Marvel's Nemesis Rise of the Imperfects for the GameCube. I had never heard of this before, and this was before the MCU was really a thing. It looks like this was also available on the PlayStation 2, and I honestly don't know much about It. It. It's one of those things that I may have to do a playthrough just to kind of learn more about It. It's one of the fun things about video games monthly, getting games that you may never have heard of such as this.
Cleanliness :
I know a lot of people do unboxings for video games monthly, one of the things I try to do differently is to open up and show you how clean the games were. Both Nintendo 64 cartridges were beautiful and simply needed a touch-up with a 1Up Cleaning Card. Yoshi's Island and Sonic Spinball, both needed some extra TLC so I broke out the Bright Boy for both of these. Yoshi's Island was dirty, but Sonic Spinball was downright filthy. I'm glad that I cleaned the cartridges as I want to make sure that I keep my systems as clean as possible.
The discs were a mixed bag in terms of cleanliness. Both had clearly been polished, and Coaster Works for the Dreamcast game looked beautiful. Marvel's Nemesis Rise of the Imperfects for the GameCube, however, had a bunch of polishing fluid dried around the spindle hole. A little bit of water and a microfiber cloth clean this right up, but it's really something I'd rather see them take care of before they ship to me.
What do I think?
This is probably one of the best boxes I have ever gotten from video games monthly. Three amazing games in Sonic Spinball, Mario Kart for the Japanese N64, and Yoshi's Island blew me away. The other three games were still good, but not up to the level of those three. We'll be doing this again in a month, make sure you are subscribed to see what we unbox then.
