Lia Thomas, a University of Pennsylvania sudent athlete, made history as the first transgender athlete to win an NCAA swimming championship when she took the title in the 500m freestyle. Lia Thomas took the spot of another cisgender female, Reka Gyorgy, who competed at the 2016 Olympics for Hungary and now swims for Virginia Tech. This has caused an outrage on social media and media throughout the US debating whether or not it was fair that Lia Thomas and any other potential future trans female athletes to compete against cisgender females competitively. Is this progress for trans rights or is it the end of female sports?
