Astragalus is a herbal supplement that has been used in China for more than 2,000 years for a wide variety of diseases and body disorders. In traditional Chinese medicine the root of Astragalus membranaceus, was taken by patients suffering from chronic diseases and healthy individuals who want to improve their body vital functions. Astragalus has been known to promote immune functions, anti-aging, anti-hypertensive and antistress properties. A compound in Astragalus called cycloastragenol was identified as one of those molecules responsible for the anti-aging properties of astragalus. Cycloastragenol promotes telomerase activity. Telomerase is an enzyme that lengthens telomeres that protect the ends of chromosomes from fusion and degradation. Telomeres shorten as we age and an unhealthy lifestyle increases the speed of telomere shortening. Critically short telomeres are recognized as a DNA damage that triggers cell senescence. Senescent cells are cells that are metabolically active but have lost their ability to proliferate. As a consequence, they limit tissue repair and the proliferation of damaged cells. They seem to accumulate in tissue as we age and produce molecules that lead to age-related diseases often associated with chronic inflammation. Senescence cells are associated with osteoporosis, frailty, osteoarthritis, cardiovascular disease, renal disease, metabolic dysfunction, and neurodegenerative diseases. Cycloastrogenol that promotes telomerase activity and elongation of telomeres increase the proliferative ability of cells, decreasing the susceptibility of an individual to age-related diseases and increasing the longevity of cells. For example, it was recently demonstrated that cycloastragenol prevents age-related bone in aging murine models by inhibiting bone resorption and improving bone formation.
