The abundance of possessions is not always a sign of God's approval. Lot selfishly chose the better pastures but ended up losing it all in Sodom when it was destroyed by sulfur from heaven. Abraham, on the other hand, learned a few lessons in Egypt about wandering away from God, and chose a much different path.
