Why does God want obedience rather than sacrifice (Hosea 6:6)?

For thousands of years, God required the Israelites to sacrifice animals to atone for their sins, and he also allowed them to provide burnt offerings as gifts if they so desired.

However, in Hosea 6:6, God said that wasn't so important anymore, and after Jesus came, the practice simply disappeared. What happened?
