Trachypterus. What are they?

They belong to a group of sloth fish, aptly named for their thin, ribbon-like bodies.

As they mature, these fish dramatically change color from dark red to shiny silver, and their frilled tail and pelvic fins shrink considerably.

Because adult ribbonfish spend most of their time in the dark depths of the ocean-usually about 900 meters or nearly 3,000 feet below the surface-observations of this regal inhabitant of the depths are rare.
