Stars in Front of Sprites

This is a finding that nobody so far has been able to explain – how is it that many stars seem to be in front of sprites, which are high voltage, high luminosity, high altitude (100 kms) aerial phenomena? For many, if stars are in front of stars, they couldn't possibly be far away. What do you think?
