A supernova is about to explode at Haishan II
3 years ago
3.71K
This is a bright blue variable star of very high mass, possibly a binary system. It is about 150 times the mass of the sun and about 5 million times as bright as the sun. 7500 light years from Earth. The movement is extremely unstable, and there are often very large bursts that can even go from round to dumbbell. This sophisticated image-processing image from 1996 shows subtle parts of the gas cloud around the mischievous star, including two well-defined circular protrusions, a fiery central region, and some strange radiation streaks. Two circular protrusions filled with gas and dust are absorbing blue and ultraviolet light from the central area.
