John Calvin was a French pastor and theologian who was integrally responsible for what we know as Christianity today. Calvin was influential during the Protestant reformation, having separated from the Catholic church in 1530. He wrote the first edition of what is commonly known as the Institutes in 1536. His writing and teaching laid the foundation for the theological perspective now known as Calvinism. After his death, Calvin’s followers developed the view that became what we know today, although many believe he may disagree with Calvinism as it is now known. Nevertheless, his perspective is of great significance.
