Corsairs of the Spanish Main

Europe was almost constantly at war during the sixteenth century in what have come to be called the “wars of religion.” And in the far off waters of the New World, European rivals intended to do as much damage to, and claim as much treasure from, Spanish colonies and ships as possible. But, Instead of fighting a traditional war, France and England both provided private ships with Letters of Marque, also called Letters of Course, to battle the Spanish in an undeclared war across the Atlantic. Among the earliest of these quasi-official pirates were known by the swashbuckling name of Corsairs, and were intimately tied to the European wars of religion.
