The Seven Churches of Revelation: Laodicea, 3:14-22

Laodicea is the last of the seven churches. It is the “lukewarm” church. On the surface, being lukewarm doesn’t seem to be all that bad, but we see that Jesus finds this to be nauseating.
“Spit you out” literally means to vomit. This is serious.
The Laodiceans had all the world’s comforts. The city was home to a very wealthy banking network. Gold was abundant. The people of Laodicea produced a fine black wool that was sought after all around the empire for clothing and rugs. Fine attire was plentiful. The city had a noted medical industry known for a soothing eye salve. Health and comfort were abounding. The Church of Laodicea seemed to be benefiting from all this affluence, but Jesus wasn’t impressed with any of it.
He recognized the church not as rich, but poor and pitiable; Not well clothed, but naked; and not clear-sighted, but blind.
This is certainly the most wayward of the seven churches. They are so far from the Lord that He says that He is outside the church knocking on the door!
As we unpack the letter to this last church, I want you to pay close attention to the description of the Lord, His accusation of the church, His solution, and His promise.
