Contrary to most bird species, belted kingfisher females have more vibrant patterns than males.
A pair of mated kingfishers will dig a tunnel into a sandy bank at a modest upward slant rather than building their nests in trees. At the end of this tube, they will build a nest. To build an air pocket in case the tunnel floods, they dig it upward.
These birds can become highly territorial during breeding season. They may even dive at people in some circumstances.
