Only life produces fruit. Machines produce work. To bear fruit you need to have a healthy inner life.
If we are inwardly bankrupt, then we will not produce fruit, we will just produce work. We were never created to be a machine, but like branches that abide deeply in Christ. Our inner life is the greatest indicator of our fruitfulness. If a person has gifts, that doesn't change the fact that a person is inwardly empty.
