Limbing Trees and John 14 {Devotional}

My heart has been heavy since a predator came under the fence and attacked one of our roosters. It’s time we clean up some of our overgrown fence rows and talk about how we deal with some of the sadder moments in life.

John 14:1-4: “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

When Jesus was speaking with his disciples during what would later become known as the Last Supper there were heavier things on their minds than some country boy losing his chicken to a neighborhood dog attack. Still, if we are told not to despair even in the most trying of times what business do I have getting hurt or angry in a moment such as this?

Losing an animal – even one as small as a chicken – is heartbreaking to us. Just because these animals aren’t “pets” it still hurts when they leave. We can use that feeling to push ourselves to provide a better, safer, healthier home for our animals. We can also use this as a chance to refocus on what is most important – that God loved the world so much he sent his only Son to suffer and die on our behalf.
