King George III Termed Americans Insurrectionists!
Americans in the mid-1770s believed in myriad conspiracy theories involving the British Crown. The King and his Parliament, rather than adopting a policy of openness, relied instead on the silencing of dissent.
For example, the Tea Act of 1773, believed by the Americans to be a conspiracy to trick them into paying external taxes to the Crown, was in fact a primarily a scheme to prevent the bankruptcy of the East India Company. Nevertheless, the Americans, who had no idea of the sorry state of "The Honourable John Company," acted upon their theory, staged the Boston Tea Party, and the predictable British response led to rebellion.
History demonstrates that repressive British actions did not squelch conspiracy theories, but rather reinforced and legitimized them. The result was The American Revolution.
