AM I PRAYING CORRECTLY? / Pastor Bob's Coffee Break

Dear Pastor Bob: I was at a bible study group yesterday and we started talking about prayers. I'm a person who believes in concrete prayers - almost like the SMART model. Of course prayers are mostly about listening to what God wants to say. But I really believe in concrete prayer - something specific and measurable. Otherwise, how will I know if the prayer is answered? But then one of the leaders in the group said, "I know people who have been praying for 20 years for me and this city without anything happening." This makes me confused. If nothing is happening or changing after 20 years of prayer (if nothing concrete or specific has come out of these prayers), are they/we really praying correctly then? Sorry for being prejudice, but I get the feeling that they are (JUST LIKE ME) not listening good enough. What's your take on this?
