QUOTES, Founding Fathers Edition, ep41 British soldier (comments on Washingtons escape)
A British soldier gives his account of general Washington fleeing Howe’s army after losing the battle at Long Island. This red coat and his fellow soldiers were very displeased with the way Howe handled this situation. In that time, it was common practice for an army to surrender after facing a loss like Washington did in this battle.
The continental army was cornered with red coats in their front, and the river to his rear. Howe thought he (Washington) would surrender, but instead Washington had his soldiers keep their fires lit at night while they fled. The following morning when Howe showed up, Washington was on the last boat out of there frustrating the British army by fleeing instead of surrendering.
