The Gulf Stream offers a considerable amount of favorable current to boats northbound up the US East Coast, up until Cape Hatteras. But it is a double-edged sword. The favorable current often comes at the cost of uncomfortable sea states (and potentially dangerous ones), as well as a tendency for unsettled weather in the form of thunderstorms and squalls.
