In this video, I discuss how Vitalik discourages Ethereans from running their own nodes. This contrasts sharply with Bitcoin culture, where the default is to run your own node.

Most Ethereans trust Metamask and Infura to give them access to the Ethereum blockchain. There is a huge conflict of interest here, since both companies are owned by ConsenSys and Joe Lubin, who was allegedly a large beneficiary of the Ethereum pre-mine.

It's impossible to have neutral, decentralized money if the majority of participants rely on blockchain data from just a few companies like Infura and Alchemy. This is "trusting" instead of "verifying." The only way to verify is to run your own node. Otherwise, you need to trust someone else's node.

When Ethereum moves to Proof of Stake and sharding, the size of the blockchain will grow even more quickly, making it impossible for all but the wealthiest and most tech-savvy to run their own nodes.

Infura and Metamask get to decide which Ethereum services ordinary people can access. Both companies are in full compliance with government regulators, which means that Ethereum is already a captured, controlled coin.
