Lift-off Gibraltar Airport

Gibraltar is often considered an unusual airport because there is a roadway that runs through the middle of the runway. The roadway makes Gibraltar and unusual airport since cars and people cross the runway when there are no planes. Each time a plane comes in for landing or departing, traffic on this only roadway entrance into Gibraltar is stopped. This is probably the biggest factor that makes Gibraltar an unusual airport.

I love how these planes land on a tarmac that is surrounded on all sides by water. This is a must watch to see how close to the water these planes land and take off. There are very few airports in the world like this, that could support commercial airline jets to land and take off under such extreme conditions.

Gibraltar is one of the most dangerous airports in the world because the runway is short, it is surrounded by water on both ends of the tarmac, an international highway bisects the tarmac with cars, bikes and people on foot crossing. The weather caused by the Strait of Gibraltar can lead to brutal crosswinds. The pilots who land here have to be very qualified. Flights to Gibraltar are currently only from the United Kingdom because Gibraltar International Airport is technically a military airport not a civilian one.
