Community leader tells NDP safety critic: Removing guns won't prevent future violent occurrences

NDP Safety critic Alistair MacGregor asked Marcell Wilson, founder of the grassroots One by One Movement in Toronto, about a legislative process suggested in Bill C-21 to allow anyone to anonymously report a person to a judge to have firearms removed from a home.

The question surrounded around the issue of how authorities deal with a firearms owner who might be suffering from a mental health crisis, or considering self-harm or suicide.

As Marcell succinctly explained to Alistair, dealing with mental health issues can't be focused on just the weapon. He said "A stronger focus on the illegal weapons that are circulating on our streets. A focus on our borders and investing there along with investing in grassroots communities so when we talk about this multi-focal approach, we are absolutely talking about investing in law enforcement, investing in grassroots, investing in our mental health service providers, investing in our education systems, and working collectively. Again, as far as focusing on any weapon, a person who is motivated enough, will find a way."
