Billboards for Christ
I recently decided to purchase a small garden flag for our front yard to share our faith. I originally bought one with just a simple cross on it, but then I thought about why I wanted to put such a display in front of our house.
Why do people wear a cross or hang one on their front door or put a sticker of a cross or fish on their car? To tell others that they are a Christian...that they believe in Christ. There's nothing wrong with that at all. But do symbols make a difference in anyone else's life? Do they make an impression? Do they convince others to buy into Christ?
When a company wants to spread the word about their new product, they put more than just their logo on a billboard. They have words sharing what this new product can do, how it provides a solution, how it makes life better. Their billboards display the most convincing information to sell their product. We need to have the same type of marketing strategies for Christ because WE are Christ’s billboards.
We see in the bible how we are to be those billboards for Christ in words and actions.
In Psalm 105:1-2, David said,
“Give thanks to the LORD and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world know what he has done. Sing to him; yes, sing his praises. Tell everyone about his wonderful deeds.” (NLT)
In Matthew 5:16, Christ tells us to share the goodness of God through our actions,
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
Apostle Paul tells us in II Corinthians 5:20,
“We are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us.”
We are the representatives of Christ! So we want to do more than just display the symbol of Christ. We need to communicate the hope, peace and solutions that only God can provide in order to convince others to buy into Christ.
We can do this in many ways. We can wear a shirt with a scripture emblazoned on it, place a scripture on our front door or on our car. We can be the example of Christ as we help and serve others. We can display a positive, hopeful attitude during tough times because we are confident of God’s promises.
So let us be Christ’s billboard! Let’s share the Gospel and all God’s wonderful promises by using words and actions. It's more powerful than any symbol could ever be.
And what did I decide about the garden flag for our front yard? Well, instead of displaying a cross, I bought a flag that shared a truth about Christ. In honor of the colorful Autumn season, it says “Fall for Jesus, He never leaves.”
