This video articulates the gist of the following: THCP, which is short for tetrahydrocannabiphorol and scientifically known as (-)-Trans-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabiphorol, is a natural cannabinoid and analog of THC present in varieties of cannabis. It’s thought to be 33 times more active at cannabinoid 1 (CB1) receptors than THC, causing an intense and intoxicating euphoric high. THCP’s legality is stuck between conflicting federal legislation. It’s not explicitly listed as a controlled substance and might be protected by the 2018 Farm Bill. However, many believe it’s an illegal substance and belongs under the Federal Analogue Act (FAA). The discovery of THCP is causing quite a storm. The mere thought of a cannabinoid stronger than THC is enough to get the cannabis world in quite the frenzy. THCP was first shown to the world on 30th December 2019 via an open-access Scientific Reports journal titled, “A novel phytocannabinoid isolated from Cannabis sativa L. with an in vivo cannabimimetic activity higher than Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol…”. THCP stands for tetrahydrocannabiphorol. It was discovered as recently as 2019, so there hasn’t been much (if any) official research on its effects quite yet. The only research we do have has been exploring its safety and potency using animal and in vitro cell cultures. This cannabinoid appears to bind to the CB1 receptors 33 times more often than delta 9 THC. Activation of the CB1 endocannabinoid receptors is what gives THC and THCP their psychoactive effects. The first paper reporting THCP extraction from a cannabis plant wasn’t published until 2019 and was later adapted to develop the manufacturing process that’s used today. Tetrahydrocannabiphorol is a cannabinoid that, like others, regulates various functions of the body to work toward getting us into homeostasis. But, without a doubt, the main purpose of THC-P is recreational. Its high is estimated to be about 10 times as intoxicating as delta 9 THC—Yes, you read that right—meaning that it can get you exquisitely high. THC-P products are said to offer a very euphoric high that can include uplifting qualities to mood in a powerful way. THCP is a naturally occurring phytocannabinoid found in cannabis and an analog of THC, the compound responsible for most cannabis psychoactivity. Discovered only in late 2019 by a team of Italian researchers, THCP is one of 120 (or more) cannabinoids found to date in the cannabis plant, with many more potentially awaiting discovery.
