Panicked fans trampled at least 125 people to death at a soccer stadium late Saturday in Indonesia, a deadly stampede that was triggered when police fired tear gas to break up brawls.
Police said the tragedy in Malang city ensued after fighting broke out in the stands after the Indonesian Premier League game between Persebaya Surabaya and Arema Malang.
Riot police fired tear gas to disperse the brawlers but it caused panic, causing fans to charge out of the stadium, East Java Police Chief Nico Afinta told reporters, according to The Associated Press.
