How to Make a Leather Top Hat, Tutorial & PDF Pattern

This is a detailed tutorial for making two types of leather top hat: one stitched with leather lace and one with thread. This can be used as a fine addition to a reenactment of a historical moment or to a Halloween costume, Victorian and Steampunk style.

DIFFICULTY: ADVANCED

HAT CIRCUMFERENCE:
✹ 54-56 cm (21-22 inch)
✹ 56-58 cm (22-22.8 inch)
✹ 58-60 cm (22.8-23.6 inch)
✹ 60-62 cm (23.6-24.4 inch)

MATERIALS
✹ BODY: 60/70 cm (23.6/27.6 inch) piece of 2.2-2.6 mm semirigid vegetable tannned leather (5-6 oz)
✹ EDGE COVER: 1.4 mm vegetable tannned leather
✹ 1 mm waxed thread
✹ 4 mm leather lace from 1 mm thick very good quality goat skin
✹ Edge painting

ACCESSORIES
✹ 1.2 mm wire galvanized wire (approximately 1 m)

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT
✹ 18 mm Olfa cutter
✹ 1.5 mm hole puncher Wuta for thread
✹ 3 mm hole puncher for leather lace
✹ John James stitching needles
✹ prong stitching needle
✹ rubber mallet
✹ cutting pad
✹ masking tape
✹ a good glue, preferably cement glue
