Landing & Departing at Gibraltar Airport; Land and Depart from Runway 27; 4K

BA492 landing at Gibraltar airport and about an hour later BA493 departs from the same end of the airport runway, runway 27.

It's a rare occurrence that these planes are able to land and depart from the same runway end. It happens when the wind is very calm, or switches directions. This same day the Manchester flight came in from runway 09 (the other end of the runway and departed that same end, while the other two flights used runway 27). I love how these planes land on a tarmac that is surrounded on all sides by water. This is a must watch to see how close to the water these planes land and take off. There are very few airports in the world like this, that could support commercial airline jets to land and take off under such extreme conditions.

Gibraltar is one of the most dangerous airports in the world because the runway is short, it is surrounded by water on both ends of the tarmac, an international highway bisects the tarmac with cars, bikes and people on foot crossing. The weather caused by the Strait of Gibraltar can lead to brutal crosswinds. The pilots who land here have to be very qualified. Flights to Gibraltar are currently only from the United Kingdom because Gibraltar International Airport is technically a military airport not a civilian one.
