Solving Homelessness Crisis Is Easier Than Politicians Want To Admit

The Oregon gubernatorial race is closer than it probably should be and a major reason is the homelessness crisis in the state. The Republican and independent in the race say they want to solve the problem but are very light on details. Solving homelessness isn't that hard: Just house them.

This is Dylan from Oregon. Hey, I just wanted to talk to you a little about the Oregon gubernatorial race we're having here. Yeah closer than it should be is my understanding right? Yeah. much closer. Basically, we have a third-party candidate running. and it looks like it's gonna be very close. And I think the reason it's going to be very close is kind of something that you hit on a lot in the show. which is that there are a lot of moderate Democrats here in Oregon who are freaked out about homelessness. And they just get angry. and you know that that's kind of the Republicans in the independent running are both drilling into this narrative that like we're gonna do something about this. But what are they going to do? What are they going to do? I mean the thing to be done is to House people. The only other thing you can do is essentially arrest them. or just make sure that they're not visible. Yeah, that's the thing I feel like a lot of these folks I live kind of in the suburbs and it just feels like a lot of these people when they talk about it they're like they just want it to disappear. like totally disappearing. And so you know these gubernatorial governors that are running or the candidates that are running are talking about it as if they're going to fix the problem with various details. but I mean I mean the Republican plan essentially is like pushing them all into a volcano. Yeah like, make them totally disappear. and so I guess it's really frustrating talking to other people I know out here. I guess what you think because the problem with it really is that you know it's kind of a function of our economy. Like we need this level for our economy to function the way it does, we really have this system where we need this amount of people living in the streets. well, and it almost feels like a governor can't combat that on their own. I mean some cities like La I know are trying some policies that may come into effect but I guess what do you think? You know how to do messaging and also policy. The problem is that we have rents going through the roof in these areas. That's what I mean. The biggest problem that we have in terms of homelessness is the expense of living in a home.
