Montreal Detective: GunControl lobby linking street violence & legal guns based on emotion not facts

André Gélinas, a Detective Sergeant (Retired) in the Intelligence Division at Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) gave his expert opinion on Bill C-21.

"The public announcement of the project in Montreal north, a city particularly affected by street gangs, implies that there's a casual link between the violence in this neighbourhood and legal handguns, legally acquired and used for safe and highly supervised sporting activities. This statement is false and the result of lobbying based on an emotional and ideological analysis. Certainly not on facts observable by police officers on the ground.

It is important for you, as parliamentarians, to understand this situation will certainly not have the desired, or announced, effect. The handguns that are used by criminals and seized by police forces in shootings, and other crimes by street gangs, outlaw motorcycle gangs, and Italian mafia, are overwhelmingly illegally acquired and originate from the United States where the sale is virtually unrestricted by constitutional right."
