Just so you know, not all chickens look more or less the same. Selective breeding has changed the way these creatures look and how they carry out their day-to-day activities. There are those chickens that are great egg layers while others are excellent for producing meat. Others are good in both while others have been given beautiful bodies that make them the excellent show animals. And how can we leave out the weird looking ones! Here are 5 Roosters You Won't Believe Actually Exist! Lets begin!

1. Polverara

The Polverara hails from the small city of Polverara in the province of Padova of North Eastern Italy. You can also call it Schiatta or Sciata. This chicken comes in either black or white in color and is commonly known for its small and upward-facing crest and beard. If you like pets, then this one is quite of a good choice. It won’t give you much trouble, especially if you live in open space. That’s right…It does better in open spaces as compared to in confined spaces such as a cage. The Polverara had some rough times in history as it had almost gone extinct in the early 1900s due to the number of 10 in both cases. We must work hard to keep the remaining ones we got today…

2. Onagadori

The beauty of this chicken is in its tail…but before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s get to some facts. Ongadori is a breed originating from the Kochi Prefecture of Japan. They come in a variety of colors: Black Breasted Red, Black Breasted Silver or Black Breasted Golden and White. The leg color is quite distinctive showing as willow in the Black-Breasted variation and yellow or white in the White variation. Now to its tail! Its tail feathers reach lengths of 12 to 27 feet. There’s nothing I have seen like it! That is definitely a high maintenance chicken to keep in your back yard! What you think?

3. Araucana

If a Chilean friend gave you a blue egg as a gift, then you my friend are treasured. Also known as the South American Rumpless, the Aracuana originates from Chile. The weird color of its eggs may be as a reuslt of a DNA retrovirus that appeared sometime early during domestication….at least that’s what the scientists tell us. The chicken is rumpless and tufted, coming in colors of black, black-red, golden, silver and white. They are quite rare, mainly owned to their difficulty to breed as most of their chicks usually die in their shells.

4. Polish

Also called the Poland, the Polish is a European breed that originates from Netherlands where the oldest accounts of the bird are tracked. It can be distinguished by its fine crest that both hens and roosters put on their heads. The chickens come in a variety of colors and are mostly bred as show birds. They can either be bearded, non-bearded or frizzle. That feathered crest on their heads does not do them much good as it impairs their vision and makes them dinner for foxes and hawks.

5. Silkie

These chickens are named after their fluffy, silk-like plumage. Boy does it have some really puffy plumage. This is just one of its strange qualities. It is also characterized by some black skin and bones, blue earlobes and five toes on each foot. Most chicken breeds only have four toes. People have been really wondering about the origin of these weird chickens and its most probable point of origin is ancient China. They come in a variety of colors including black, blue, buff, grey, partridge and white. This is just the perfect pet as they have a calm and friendly temperament.
