Star Ocean: First Departure - A Tepid Start to a Series

Star Ocean is one of those series I constantly hear mentioned but never check out—until now. How does the remake fare today?

Developed by Tose, Star Ocean: First Departure is a remake of the first Star Ocean game, originally released for PSP in 2007. An updated "R" version came to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in 2019.

The original Star Ocean was developed by Tri-Ace, formed by members of the dev team for Tales of Phantasia, and was released only for the Super Famicom in 1996.
